The Beca Project is a registered 501(c)(3) Public Charity (EIN 38-3821120)
DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE.
We are run entirely by volunteers in the US and Guatemala so 100% of your donation directly impacts the people of San Pedro La Laguna.
The Beca Project has grown to include a variety of options in support of our mission and donations of any amount are gratefully received.
1) STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP in San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala

For each student, the cost for tuition, uniform, and supplies is $400 per year for each of the first 3 years of secondary school (the US equivalent of middle school) and $600 for each of the next 3 years. To date, all sponsors have agreed to 6 years of sponsorship, one year at a time, for a total of $3000. All students are encouraged to continue their studies at the university level. Many sponsors choose to continue to assist their students with university tuition; if the sponsors choose not to continue, other sponsors will be found. Scholarships at the university level are the same as the previous 3 years, $600/year.
Although many sponsors are individuals and couples, some students are sponsored by groups of friends or extended families. It may be possible to match shorter term donors with older students who have fewer years left in school or donors with less than the full scholarship amount per year with other interested donors.
The school year begins in January and ends in late October.
Sponsors receive photos of their student and his or her family, letters, and quarterly grade reports from the students. Those sponsors who have visited their students in San Pedro La Laguna have found it to be a deeply rewarding experience.
2) EMERGENCY FOOD AND MEDICAL FUND

We have established a food and medical fund for families in San Pedro La Laguna who are going through an especially difficult time or need medical care; it has saved lives. This money is mainly in place for Beca students’ families but has also been used for other families in the community in dire circumstances including health emergencies and devastating mud slides.
3) KAMOON HOME BUILDING PROJECT

The cost of constructing a safe, new home for a marginalized family in San Pedro La Laguna is between $12,000 and $15,000, depending on the size of the family and the location of the home. The project’s 7th home is nearly completed and fundraising is underway for home #8.
